SIA Background

Land planning issues, environmental concerns and a desire to inform the community about industry are some of the reasons why the Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA) was formed in 1974.

The goal of the SIA is to provide a common voice for member companies. Members of the association work together to address issues arising out of industrial operations as well as concerns of the public and government.

Environmental management is a priority focus of the SIA. It stems from industry, the public and government all desiring more detailed and accurate air quality data in the capital region. The logical step to obtain this information and understand the impact of industry was to develop an ambient air quality monitoring network.

Since its inception, the SIA has advocated retaining a transition zone between heavy industry and residential neighbourhoods. A transition zone benefits the community by reducing the nuisance effects of heavy industry and providing a distance of land to minimize the impact of a large-scale industrial incident.

In 1991 the SIA formalized its mission, which is to work with the community, City and County to promote a safe and healthy working and living environment. The philosophy behind this mission brought the SIA together in 1974 and continues today.
